About Family Human Life Unit Lagos

The Family and Human Life unit, mandated by the Catholic Bishop Conference of Nigeria, stands as a guiding force in fostering Christian values, strengthening marriages, and upholding the dignity of human life—a beacon for the Church and society.

Tabbed Interface

The Family and Human life unit is an apostolate delegated by the Catholic Bishop Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) to spearhead and facilitate all her pastoral initiatives in the areas of marriage, family, as well as in upholding the dignity of human life from conception to transition.
The Catholic Bishops of Nigeria regard the family apostolate as most distinguished in promoting the values of Christian marriage and family life, which make family members missionaries unto one another thereby promoting exemplary living in all spheres of life.
On account of the importance of the family in the Church, the Family and Human Life ministry can be said to be the foremost of all diocesan and parish ministries as the family is the pillar of the Church and the society at large.

To promote the gospel of life, protect the sanctity and dignity of every human person from conception to natural death, and to support families to live out authentic family values. We protect, uphold, and defend the dignity of every human life: the unborn, the born, the sick, the healthy, the elderly, the mentally and physically challenged; and to affirm genuine marriage and family principles.

To see Lagos Archdiocese thriving with the Culture of Life and authentic marriage and family values. We envision a society guided by a culture of life where the traditional family- a man, a woman and their children – is the foundation of all initiatives.

Pro-Life
In our present social context, marked by a dramatic struggle between the ‘culture of life’ and the ‘culture of death’, we stand for life and speak against all forms of dehumanisation of human life.
We are committed towards building a new culture of life through a general sensitisation of consciences. We believe that the right to life is the foundation and basis for all other human rights and promotion.

Marriage
Marriage is the sacred union of one man and one woman for the procreation and care of children. It forms the core of the family which is the bedrock and foundational cell of our civilisation and as such is sanctioned by God, upheld by our culture, celebrated in our society and protected by our government.
The family deserves the protection from all civilised institutions as it predates society and is not subject to it. So our role is to promote it, protect it and preserve it at a time like this when many countries have unfortunately chosen a different path. – CBCN Communique, 2018.
Through our programmes and courses, we train single, engaged and married couples on the truth and purpose of marriage. We train facilitators to be better equipped in the task of accompanying couples, families and those discerning their vocation.

Family
The family is the bedrock of society hence when the family is dysfunctional, it inevitably leads to a dysfunctional society. To heal the broken world, we focus on the family through various pastoral initiatives aimed towards a rediscovery and reaffirmation of God’s plan for the family.
As reiterated by Pope Francis ‘it is necessary to rediscover the plan drawn by God for the family, to reaffirm its greatness and irreplaceability in the service of life and society’ (Holy House of Loreto –Italy, March 2, 2019). For this reason, we promote an ongoing formation for men and women so that they can actively live out their vocation as missionary families in the tainted world.
